Racing is back in Boston! While we are still many months from Head Of The Charles, the rowers are back at it on the river. Further downstream from the start of the Head Of The Charles course, you’ll find the 2K course. Nearly every weekend starting in March and running through April, you’ll find a group of collegiate races taking on the Basin as part of the Charles River Collegiate Racing Series.
The Charles River Collegiate Racing Series sees local crews from Boston College, Boston University, Harvard, Radcliffe, MIT, Northeastern, Simmons and Wellesley and other visiting crews. The races are typically duel or tri races, although at times we have seen as many as five crews competing head to head.
The 2024 schedule was planned for nine different racing days and is already well underway. Just this weekend, we lucked out with beautiful weather as we saw Northeastern Women vs BU & URI, Northeastern Men vs Brown, and Harvard Lights vs MIT & Dartmouth. We saw some close races, with our narrowest margin of the day at just 0.2 seconds apart. While my eye was fast enough to catch this order of finish, we did have a camera to verify what I witnessed on the line.
We have a fun bunch of officials that make up the referee group for this series in the Spring. After each morning of racing, we find ourselves recapping the day with a cup of coffee at our local coffee shop. After the first day of racing this year, a few of us snapped a shot at that local spot. Pictured (from left to right) are Howard Meisner, Tom Mannle, Kate Suyo, Janet Taylor, and Kim Degutis.
We’ll keep an eye on the river for now until we see you in the fall! Happy Spring Racing Season!
